mel·an·choly
noun
a feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious cause.
"an air of melancholy surrounded him"
I heard the word melancholy for the first time in elementary school while reading the book “Because of Winn Dixie”. One of the characters had suffered great tragedy, and after returning home from war decided to create something sweet for the world. He became a candymaker, but the resulting candies, though delicious, made whoever ate them reminisce upon both the sweetness and sorrow in their own life. One character described this feeling as “melancholy”, and my childhood self latched onto this newly discovered word. I too was often inexplicably sad.
To me, this playlist is melancholy. It’s for when suddenly you feel so… well, you can’t even put your finger on what exactly you’re feeling or where it came from. It’s a little sad, a little thoughtful, but not without a touch of hope.
